Description

Special Topics in Astronomy - The Life Cycle of Stars

Instructor Lauren Albin

Course fee $15. (Requires ICL membership - $30 annually if not already a member).

Learn about the life cycle of stars, how they are born, how we classify them based on their color & size, and how they die. Stars are some of the most interesting objects in our universe, in fact, as Carl Sagan says, we ourselves are made of star-stuff. It is true that the elements that make up our body were once cooked inside the heart of a star or formed in a fiery explosion when a star dies. We will also learn a bit about black holes and planetary nebula, because these are the different fates of stars.

Lauren Albin earned her MS in Space Studies with an emphasis in astronomy from American Public University and her MFA in poetry from Arizona State University. She is director of the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium and instructor of astronomy at Young Harris College. Before stepping into her role at YHC, she worked as a staff astronomer at Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta and taught English and Creative Writing at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA.
