DESCRIPTION:Rachel Watson is a contemporary artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans installation\, alternative photography\, printmaking\, woodworking\, jewelry\, book arts\, and textiles. She earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia in 2020. Following graduate school\, she worked with the Newcomb Art Museum to digitize its 7\,000-piece collection. After relocating from New Orleans to North Carolina\, Watson served for four years as the 2D Coordinator at the John C. Campbell Folk School. Originally from Georgia\, she now lives in North Carolina\, where she is the Executive Director and founder of Elf School of the Arts\, owner and promoter of Elf Hall\, and Executive Director of the Cherokee County Arts Council. ARTIST STATEMENT: "My work focuses on the forgotten\, the neglected\, the abandoned. It focuses on the people who were uprooted from their homes and admitted into a place with a horrifying reputation and the fear they must have felt. The buildings that they lived in\; that they died in\, that forever changed them are the subject of my recent multimedia exploration of a well-known\, defunct mental institution\, in Milledgeville\, Georgia."
